It is all too easy to get caught up in the euphoria that surrounds victory and sometimes we say things in the heat of the moment that we regret later, so I thought it better to wait a few days and then make a sober assessment of the results.

More than 9,000 councillors will be elected on May 5th, about 5,000 of which are currently held by the Conservatives, 1,800 the Liberal Democrats, 1,600 by Labour and 800 by other parties and independents.

Monday saw the figures published for tax revenues collected by the government during January, and while the tax take from ordinary working people was down, the very good news is that the tax take from business was sharply up, meaning that January saw the first fiscal surplus for over two years.
